Brookline High football could hit a milestone Thursday that the program hasn't reached since 2016.

The Warriors (1-0) travel to Lexington (0-1) on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m. for a Bay State Conference matchup. A win would give Brookline its first 2-0 start in 10 years and match the team's entire win total from a 2-9 season in 2025, as MassLive reported in its BSC games-to-watch list.

Brookline rolled Newton South 31-9 in the opener, and the two players who powered that win earned Eastern Mass. players-of-the-week honors from the Boston Globe.

Quarterback Brendan Bottiglieri, in his second year running the spread offense, went 7-of-14 for 234 yards and two touchdowns. He broke the game open with an 88-yard scoring strike to receiver Omer Zilberberg to start the second half. Tailback Jonathan Cartwright piled up 168 all-purpose yards and scored twice.

The numbers earned both players Globe player-of-the-week recognition.

Head coach Chad Hunte, in his ninth season, brought back eight key starters for 2026. Tight end Carter Cagnina, receivers Christian Bowen and Nate Kelly, and linebackers Alexander Muravyov and Jameson Young all return. Senior lineman Sean Clingingsmith anchors an otherwise inexperienced offensive line, a concern the Globe flagged in its preseason Division 1 preview.

Lexington presents a contrast on paper but enters Thursday reeling. The Minutemen lost 48-0 to Burlington in Week 1 and have yet to score this season. Second-year coach John DeLuca, whose career record entering 2026 sits at 2-8, runs a slot-T offense with seniors Mike Denoncourt and Griffin Leahy splitting quarterback duties. Either can shift to tailback depending on the play call.

With Lexington's new high school under construction, the Minutemen are playing home games at nearby Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical High School.

The Warriors' Week 1 win came during a wild opening weekend across the Bay State Conference.

Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Minuteman.
