Stop & Shop is giving all shoppers 10% off their next in-store purchase after a cyberattack knocked out the grocery chain's website and app for nearly a week.
The discount, worth up to $10, runs through Thursday, Oct. 22. Customers can claim it by checking in at the Savings Station inside their local store, including the location at 155 Harvard Street in Brookline.
Stop & Shop President Roger Wheeler announced the offer in a statement on Friday, Oct. 16. Wheeler said the company's teams are "working around the clock" to restore online services and added that there is no evidence customer data was compromised.
The outage traces to a cybersecurity incident at Ahold Delhaize, Stop & Shop's parent company. Ahold Delhaize, based in the Netherlands, said Tuesday, Oct. 13 that it detected a security issue within its network and took some systems offline as a precaution. The company said it is working with external cybersecurity experts and "the appropriate authorities."
The disruption has affected all five of Ahold Delhaize's U.S. grocery banners, Grocery Dive reported. Websites for Stop & Shop, Hannaford, Food Lion, Giant Food and The Giant Company went down. As of Oct. 16, Stop & Shop's website still displayed a maintenance message, according to Patch.
Physical stores have stayed open throughout the incident.
The Brookline Harvard Street location operates 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closes at 9 p.m. on Sundays, according to the store's listing.
Shoppers who rely on online ordering can still place delivery orders through DoorDash, Instacart and Uber Eats. Western Mass News reported that Stop & Shop had also offered $15 off orders of $75 or more on those platforms earlier in the week.
Grocery Dive noted this is the second cybersecurity incident for Ahold Delhaize in roughly two years. A 2024 breach forced similar outages and potentially exposed data belonging to more than 2 million people, according to the trade publication.
Stop & Shop has not said when its website and app will be restored. The 10% in-store discount expires Oct. 22.
