First Parish in Brookline will throw a free Halloween party on Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The event, called Halloween Hoot, features costumes, games, spooky music and trick-or-treating, according to the church's event listing. The marquee attraction is an "Ancient Spooky Cellar Tour" of the building's lower level.

That cellar has real history. The Unitarian Universalist congregation traces its roots to 1717, when farmers in what was then called Muddy River petitioned the Massachusetts legislature to form their own township and church. The current meeting house was completed in 1893. Theodore Roosevelt married his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee, at First Parish on Oct. 27, 1880, according to Wikipedia.

The Rev. Jason Lydon leads the congregation.
