Brookline's Public Health Department declared a heat emergency running Thursday, Aug. 6 through Saturday, Aug. 8, with temperatures expected above 90°F and a heat index between 95° and 100°.

It's the second heat emergency the town has declared this summer, following a two-day declaration in mid-July.

The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for the Brookline area from 11 a.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. Friday. The town's declaration extends through Saturday based on anticipated conditions. As of Wednesday afternoon, Boston Logan Airport recorded 87°F under mostly cloudy skies.

Where to cool down

Five cooling centers will be open during the emergency:

  • Brookline Village Library — Thursday 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Coolidge Corner Library — Thursday 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Putterham Library — Thursday 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Brookline COA & Senior Center, 95 Winchester St. — Thursday and Friday 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. (closed Saturday)
  • Public Safety Building Community Room, 350 Washington St. — open 24 hours, seven days a week

Free pool access and splashpads

The Evelyn Kirrane Aquatics Center at 60 Tappan St. is offering free access to its shallow pool and diving well during regular hours and non-programmed times for the duration of the emergency. Lap pools still require a day pass or membership, though reduced rates are available for seniors, students, veterans and disabled participants.

Splashpads at 19 parks and playgrounds across town are running. Coolidge Playground on Columbia Street is out of service.

Summer Eats program moves indoors

The Summer Eats free meal program, which normally operates at 575 Brookline Ave. Playground, will relocate to the Denny Room at the Public Health Building, 11 Pierce St., on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program serves free breakfast and lunch to kids, teens and adults with no ID or registration required.

Utility help and alerts

Residents who cannot afford to run air conditioning may qualify for discounts through Eversource. The town recommends using AC on days above 90°F.

Town Administrator Chas Carey encouraged residents in his July newsletter to sign up for Alert Brookline at BrooklineMA.gov/Alert for emergency notifications. Additional heat safety resources are available at BrooklineMA.gov/Heat.
