Palme d'Or-winning director Cristian Mungiu will appear at the Coolidge Corner Theatre on Sunday, Oct. 11. The evening includes a preview screening of his new film FJORD, a post-film Q&A and the 2026 Coolidge Impact Award ceremony.

Mungiu becomes the second filmmaker to receive the Impact Award, which the Coolidge created to recognize artists whose work demonstrates "artistic bravery and persistence of vision" and inspires social change. Iranian director Jafar Panahi received the inaugural award in 2025.

The theatre announced the event on X on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Member pre-sale tickets went on sale Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 11 a.m., capped at 100. General tickets go on sale Thursday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. at coolidge.org.

FJORD stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple who relocate with their five children to a remote coastal village in Norway. Their lives unravel when a teacher notices bruises on one of the children and allegations of abuse surface, forcing a collision between the family's beliefs and their new community's values.

The film won five prizes at the Cannes Film Festival in May, including the Palme d'Or, the François Chalais Prize, the Prix de la Citoyenneté, the Ecumenical Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize, as Romania Insider reported. It marked Mungiu's second Palme d'Or. His first came in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

"We took the risk to speak aloud about things that many of us know and many of us share … but don't dare to say in public," Mungiu said in his Cannes acceptance speech in May. "… This film is a pledge against any kind of fundamentalism."

Romania has selected FJORD as its entry for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, according to Gold Derby. Neon is distributing the film in the U.S., with a theatrical release set for Oct. 9. The Coolidge's own regular run begins Friday, Oct. 16.
