Brookline's Halloween lineup on Saturday, Oct. 31, packs a morning puppet show, evening trick-or-treating and an all-night horror marathon into one day.

Shadow puppets meet Baba Yaga

Puppet Showplace Theater opens the day with "Lisa the Wise: A Baba Yaga Story," a 45-minute shadow-puppet show with performances at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The show follows a girl named Lisa who meets the famous witch of Slavic folklore. Dancing houses, enchanted dolls and "ghost servants" bring the tale to life with a contemporary twist, according to the theater's listing.

Sarah Nolen, a puppeteer and filmmaker based in Waltham, created and performs the show through her company, Puppet Motion. She is the third resident artist in Puppet Showplace Theater's history. Her credits include shadow-puppet work on the American Repertory Theater's "The Odyssey" in 2025 and a puppet role in Adam McKay's "Don't Look Up" in 2021.

Tickets are $18.50 for general admission, plus a $3 service fee. The theater also offers a $3 Card to Culture rate for families with WIC, EBT, MassHealth or ConnectorCare cards. The show is recommended for ages 4 to 10, though all ages are welcome.

Kids can stick around after each performance to meet the puppets, try a dress-up station and grab coloring sheets. Those activities run for 30 minutes after every show.

Beals Street trick-or-treating

One of Brookline's best-known neighborhood Halloween traditions returns Saturday evening. Beals Street welcomes trick-or-treaters from 4 to 8 p.m., according to Patch.

25th Horror Marathon at the Coolidge

Then the night belongs to horror fans.

The Coolidge Corner Theatre caps Oct. 31 with its 25th Halloween Horror Marathon, starting at 11:30 p.m. The all-night event opens with Boris Karloff in the original "The Mummy," followed by Hammer Films' "The Mummy's Shroud," screening from a rare archival 35mm print from the U.K. The Coolidge says it will be the first time the Hammer film has screened in 35mm in North America in decades.

Five more films round out the marathon, but the theater is keeping those titles secret until they hit the screen. The night also includes a costume contest, "mummified music," and 35mm trailers and shorts.

The Coolidge is also screening "Frankenweenie" on Saturday as part of its kids programming.
