Who gets first dibs on Brookline's playing fields? The answer could change Tuesday night.

The Park and Recreation Commission is set to vote July 14 on a revised policy that would clarify who needs permits to use town parks and athletic fields ahead of the busy fall sports season.

The update is designed to settle common questions for youth leagues, school teams, and community groups by:

  • Defining what counts as organized sports
  • Clarifying when a permit is required
  • Explaining what qualifies as casual play
  • Setting priority between permit holders and walk-up users
  • Matching the written rules with posted park signage

The changes are intended to give Park Rangers clearer guidance when enforcing field use rules. The full proposed language has not yet been released publicly.

The vote comes just before youth leagues and community organizations begin reserving fields for the fall.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m., with the sports policy vote scheduled for 8:05 p.m. Residents can speak during public comment or submit written comments before the meeting.
