Gallery 93 opens Trachtenberg paintings exhibit Sept. 14

A new exhibition by Boston artist Barbara Trachtenberg opens Monday, Sept. 14 at Gallery 93 in the Brookline Senior Center.

"Without a Map: Paintings & Mixed Media" features work in oil, acrylic, found materials, collaged papers and drawing at the gallery's space at 93 Winchester St. The show runs through Nov. 30.

Trachtenberg, who moved to Boston from Peterborough, N.H., describes herself as an itinerant artist who draws inspiration from people and places encountered in her travels. Her pieces may suggest landscapes or figures but are built on texture, color and layered materials. She allows chance into her process, according to the Senior Center's announcement, weaving between intentional moves and happenstance.

"Rather than illustrating an idea, I want to create space for the viewer's discovery, and self-discovery," Trachtenberg said in her artist's statement. "I invite you to view each work by looking slowly, finding unexpected connections with your own life …"

The gallery is open weekdays.

A MacDowell Fellow, Trachtenberg has completed residencies in rural France, Lisbon and Brescia, Italy. She has mounted solo shows in Havana, Cambridge and rural France, and exhibited in group shows at venues including Fountain Street, the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, ConcordArt and Mosesian. She also serves as MacDowell Fellows Regional Liaison for the Boston area, a role she was elected to in 2019.

Curator Hilary Tolan organized the exhibit. Gallery 93 operates on a rotating exhibition schedule, with a summer show running in June before the Trachtenberg installation. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The show includes an artist's talk and reception on Thursday, Oct. 22, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., with Trachtenberg speaking at 2 p.m. Residents can contact program manager Jamie Jensen at (617) 730-2753 or the Senior Center's main line at (617) 730-2770 for details.
