Lotta Bradburn Schick Park reopened Friday afternoon after a full renovation gave Aspinwall Hill families a playground worth exploring all over again.
The redesigned playground now splits into two age groups — one for kids 2 to 5, another for ages 5 to 12 — with custom play structures, two new swing sets on rubber safety surfacing, and a picnic pavilion separated from the lawn by a low fence. An accessible sloped walkway now connects the playground to a rebuilt basketball court, and a new loop path circles the lawn. The town also added updated entry steps with stone walls, a new irrigation system, benches, a drinking fountain with a bottle filler, and native trees and shrubs throughout.
Parks and Open Space Director Milee Pradhan said the finished park "reflects the community's vision for a new and improved playground, basketball court, walking paths, lawn space, and abundant seating."
The park was still under construction as of December, when major structural work — retaining walls, stairs, the pavilion, fencing and play equipment — was wrapping up. The contractor came back in early spring to finish the rubber surfacing, lawn and plantings before the July reopening.
Green Dog off-leash hours remain suspended at Schick Park until the growing season ends, giving the new lawn time to establish. The town expects to resume off-leash hours in late fall and will notify Green Dog participants directly when that happens.
The town is planning a formal community celebration with family activities later this year. Details will be posted on the town's website and social media once finalized. In the meantime, renovation photos and updates are available at brooklinema.gov/3714, or by emailing [email protected].
