Brookline High's girls cross country team lost 18-41 to Newton North on Wednesday, Oct. 21, closing the regular season at 4-5 overall.
The Bay State Conference dual meet at Larz Anderson Park doubled as senior night for the Warriors. Junior Charlotte Doench led Brookline with a third-place finish in 18:42, according to MassLive results.
Freshman Hannah Tipton finished seventh at 19:16. Sophomore Josephine Schneider placed ninth at 19:21. Sofia Ott (19:22) and Leena Bhandari-Cordoba (19:43) rounded out Brookline's scoring five, finishing 10th and 12th.
Newton North's Esty Dundik won the race in 18:07, with teammate Maggie Abely second at 18:32. Newton North improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in conference with the victory. Both seniors are among MassLive's eight runners to watch heading into the postseason.
Head coach Michael DeYoung told The Cypress, the school's student newspaper, that several runners set personal bests. He singled out Doench, saying she "had an incredible race, PR'd [improved] by around a minute and a half and was right behind some of the top kids in the state."
Senior captain Georgia Gray did not race because of an injury but praised the team's underclassmen, The Cypress reported. Gray highlighted strong performances from Schneider and Tipton.
The loss dropped Brookline to 2-2 in Bay State Conference Carey Division play.
The regular season is over. The Bay State Conference Championship is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31, at Wrentham Developmental Center, according to MassLive. MIAA divisional meets and the Meet of Champions follow later in November.
