Brookline's Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off facility closed 90 minutes early Tuesday, part of the town's response to a declared heat emergency that pushed the Department of Public Works to shorten hours and protect outdoor workers.
The facility ran from 7:30 to 11 a.m. instead of its usual 7:30 to 12:30 window, with the DPW giving residents just one day's notice. "Officially going to be closed early tomorrow to keep our employees safe," the department said in its announcement.
The drop-off program runs biweekly, every other Tuesday from May through October, so anyone who arrived after 11 a.m. or missed the session altogether faces roughly a two-week wait for the next one. Because the site sits entirely outdoors at the Brookline Transfer Station, the DPW notes it can close or shift hours due to weather conditions at any time — worth remembering before making the trip.
The DPW will host a special collection event in North Brookline on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Centre Street West Parking Lot — a good option if the regular schedule doesn't line up with your plans. The program is free for all Brookline residents with proof of residency.
The next regular session hasn't been explicitly confirmed, so residents should check brooklinema.gov/3764/Hazardous-Waste-Drop-Off-Programs or call 617-730-2000 before making the trip to Newton Street.
