Brookline pet owners can bring their dogs, cats and other companions to Lyon Chapel on Sunday, Aug. 30, for First Parish in Brookline's annual Blessing of the Animals service.
The multigenerational gathering runs from 10 to 11 a.m. and includes song, story and a chance for attendees to share joys and sorrows tied to their animal companions. The service honors pets past, present or future, welcoming those grieving a lost animal alongside families with new ones.
Pets are welcome.
They must be leashed or contained, and the church asks that owners bring only animals comfortable in a crowd. A social hour with treats follows the service, and attendees are encouraged to stay and visit. Childcare is provided.
First Parish in Brookline, a Unitarian Universalist congregation, posted the event announcement on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The church lists the gathering as part of its Summer Service series on its upcoming worship calendar.
The congregation is one of Brookline's oldest institutions. Its first meeting house was framed in 1714, and it has occupied several locations in town over more than 300 years. Today it identifies as a Welcoming Congregation and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association.
The Blessing of the Animals is open to the public. The church's announcement does not mention a fee or registration requirement.
