Brookline's three-day heat emergency is now in its second and hottest day, with temperatures above 90°F and a heat index reaching 95–100°F through Saturday, Aug. 8.
Public Health Director John Kleschinsky's department declared the emergency on Thursday, Aug. 6, citing oppressive heat and humidity, according to the town's civic alert. This is Brookline's second heat emergency this summer, following a two-day declaration in mid-July. The current emergency runs one day longer.
Five cooling centers are open across town:
- Public Library of Brookline, Brookline Village & Coolidge Corner branches: Friday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
- Putterham Library: Friday 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
- Brookline Senior Center, 95 Winchester St.: Friday 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. (closed Saturday)
- Public Safety Building Community Room, 350 Washington St.: Open 24/7
- Evelyn Kirrane Aquatics Center, 60 Tappan St.: The shallow pool and diving well are free for residents during regular hours and non-programmed times throughout the emergency.
The town noted that nearly 20 splashpads at parks and playgrounds are also available for cooling off.
Free meals moved indoors
The Summer Eats meal program relocated indoors for the emergency. Free meals are available Friday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Denny Room at the Brookline Public Health Building, 11 Pierce St.
How to stay safe
The town's heat safety guidance urges residents to drink water before feeling thirsty, avoid alcohol and sugary beverages, keep blinds closed during the day, and plan outdoor activities before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Anyone experiencing a high body temperature, confusion, fainting or unconsciousness should call 911 immediately.
The guidance also asks residents to check on family, friends and neighbors, especially those living alone.
Qualifying Eversource customers can access energy discounts to help offset the cost of running air conditioning during the emergency.
