Brookline voters head to the polls Tuesday, Sept. 1, for the Massachusetts state primary election.

All precinct polling locations opened at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m., according to the Town Clerk's office. Voters unsure of their assigned precinct can look it up on the Secretary of State's website.

One change to watch: ballot colors have switched this cycle. Democratic ballots are now blue. Republican ballots are red.

The Town Clerk's office urged voters to check the header on their ballot before filling it out.

Mail ballots: 8 p.m. deadline

Voters who requested a mail ballot must get it to the Town Clerk's office by 8 p.m. Tuesday. Sending it through the mail at this point will not work. Three ballot drop boxes are available around town:

  • Brookline Town Hall, 333 Washington St.
  • Coolidge Corner Library, 31 Pleasant St.
  • Putterham Library, 959 W. Roxbury Parkway

Voters who requested a mail ballot but have not returned it can still vote in person on Election Day. The Town Clerk's office said safeguards are in place to ensure only one ballot per voter is counted.

Track your ballot

Voters who cast an early or mail ballot can check its status on the state's Track My Ballot site. If the site shows a mail ballot has not been received, the voter can go to their precinct and vote in person Tuesday.

Select Board also meets Tuesday

The Brookline Select Board is also scheduled to meet Tuesday evening, the same night polls are open. Town Clerk Ben Kaufman criticized that scheduling at the board's Aug. 26 meeting, calling it an "unacceptable conflict" that could force residents to choose between voting and attending the public meeting.

"Creating a situation where a voter has to give up the opportunity to vote so they can participate in a public meeting is voter suppression, and we do not do that here in Brookline," Kaufman said at the Aug. 26 meeting, as Brookline.News reported.

Town Administrator Charles Carey defended the decision, saying the board needed the session to finish work before the fall Town Meeting warrant closes Thursday, Sept. 3.
