Advance tickets are on sale at the Coolidge Corner Theatre for La Bola Negra in 35mm. Screenings of the award-winning Spanish drama begin Friday, Oct. 30, in Brookline.
The theater announced the sale on X on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The Coolidge is one of roughly a dozen venues nationwide selected for the 35mm presentation, alongside the Music Box in Chicago, Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn and Landmark Nuart in Los Angeles, Deadline reported.
Directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the Spanish filmmaking duo known as Los Javis, shared the Best Director award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival for the film. It went on to win the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Audience Award at San Sebastián. Spain selected it as the country's official submission for the International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards, Variety reported.
The film follows three men across three eras of Spanish history: 1932, 1937 and 2017. It explores LGBT heritage and pays tribute to the murdered poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, according to Deadline. The cast includes Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, Milo Quifes, Guitarricadelafuente and Carlos González. It runs 2 hours and 39 minutes and is in Spanish with English subtitles. It is rated R.
"We deserve to have big movies and LGBT people deserve to be the leads of big movies," co-director Ambrossi told Variety in May, ahead of the film's Cannes premiere.
Netflix is releasing La Bola Negra theatrically starting Oct. 16 in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to 17 markets, including the Boston area, on Oct. 30. The Coolidge is part of that expansion, according to Netflix's theatrical listing. The film arrives on the streaming service Dec. 2.
Brookline audiences can also catch an early look at the film on Sunday, Oct. 4, when it screens as the closing night selection of CineFest Latino Boston at the Coolidge. The festival runs Wednesday, Sept. 30, through Oct. 4. That screening is a separate event from the Oct. 30 theatrical run.
Tickets for the Oct. 30 screenings are available at coolidge.org.
