Brookline's football season will not extend into the MIAA Division 1 playoffs.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) released its eight-division football tournament bracket Sunday, Nov. 1, and the Warriors were not among the 16 teams selected for Division 1, according to the Boston Globe. Brookline finished the regular season 3-5 after falling to Wellesley 26-7 on Oct. 30, according to the Boston Herald's scores roundup.

The Warriors entered that final regular-season game at 3-4. A MassLive preview published before the Wellesley game described the matchup as one where both teams were "mostly playing for pride and to build momentum toward Thanksgiving and next season."

To qualify for the MIAA football tournament, teams need at least three wins and seven games played, according to the Boston Herald's power rankings report from Oct. 20. The top 16 teams in each division's power rankings earn a postseason spot. Brookline met the minimum win threshold but did not rank high enough to crack the 16-team Division 1 field.

A season of two halves

Head coach Chad Hunte's squad opened the year 2-0 before dropping five of its final six games, according to MassLive. The losing streak included defeats to New Bedford, Natick and Framingham before the Oct. 30 loss at Wellesley.

The Herald's Week 7 preview noted that Brookline and Framingham were "vying for one of the final spots in what is expected to be a loaded Div. 1 tournament field" when both sat at 3-3. The Warriors lost that game and never recovered.

Who made the Division 1 bracket

St. John's Prep (8-0) earned the No. 1 seed, followed by St. John's of Shrewsbury (7-1) at No. 2, Central Catholic (5-3) at No. 3 and Wachusett (8-0) at No. 4, according to the Globe's bracket listing. Bay State Conference rival Natick (4-4) landed the No. 11 seed and will travel to No. 6 Xaverian on Friday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m.

All first-round games will be played at the higher seed's home field. The eight Super Bowl championship games are scheduled for Dec. 3-5 at Gillette Stadium.

What's next

The Warriors' season is not over. Brookline still has its annual Thanksgiving rivalry game ahead, a tradition that falls outside the MIAA tournament bracket.
