Brookline Police are asking residents to help identify a man suspected of shoplifting at a Commonwealth Avenue business on the night of July 24.

The department released surveillance images of the suspect, who was captured on camera shortly before 10 p.m., according to a police bulletin reported by Patch. The exact business has not been disclosed.

Police described the man as wearing black shorts, a green T-shirt, dark Nike sneakers and a black backpack. He had tattoos on both forearms.

The department emphasized that the man is not considered wanted at this time. The bulletin is a request for identification only, not an arrest warrant.

Pattern on Commonwealth Avenue

The July 24 bulletin marks at least the second time in 2026 that Brookline Police have issued a public identification request tied to shoplifting on Commonwealth Avenue. On May 19, the department posted a separate appeal on its official X account seeking help identifying a different suspect linked to a May 10 incident at a Commonwealth Avenue retailer. In that case, police also noted the individual was "not wanted at this time" and directed tips to the same 617-730-2711 detective line.

The July 24 case is also distinct from other recent larceny investigations the department has publicized this summer, including a Coolidge Corner suspect identification request in July and a village-area larceny bulletin involving two teens. Each case involves different suspects, dates and locations.

Police have not released the name of the Commonwealth Avenue business, the value of merchandise allegedly taken, or any additional details about the July 24 incident beyond the suspect's physical description and clothing.
