Brookline residents looking to squeeze the last drops out of summer have at least six free events to choose from between Tuesday, Aug. 18, and Sunday, Aug. 23, including a back-to-school vaccine clinic, an outdoor movie at Charles River Speedway and a pizza party for young readers at Brookline Booksmith.
Tuesday, Aug. 18: Vaccines and a book launch
Brookline Public Health & Human Services is holding a free back-to-school immunization clinic from 10 a.m. to noon at 11 Pierce St. Walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and bring a printed copy of their vaccine records. Families with questions can call the department at (617) 730-2300.
That evening at 7 p.m., Brookline Booksmith hosts a free release celebration for "Clown in a Cornfield 4: Lights! Camera! Frendo!" by Adam Cesare, the fourth installment in his horror series. New York Times bestselling author Paul Tremblay will lead the conversation at 279 Harvard St.
Wednesday, Aug. 19: Free outdoor screening
Coolidge Corner Theatre brings "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" to the Charles River Speedway at 8 p.m. The screening is free. The theater's outdoor series runs one film per month at the Speedway through October.
Thursday, Aug. 20: Storytime finale and open studios
The Brookline Village Library wraps its summer storytime series with a final session from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in Hunneman Hall on the library's second floor. The program features stories, songs and movement for children ages 0–5. Free tickets are available at the Children's Room Desk starting 30 minutes before the program.
Later that evening, Station Street Studios opens its doors from 5 to 9 p.m. at 17 Station St., Suite 202. Visitors can make a print, watch a demonstration on crafting beaded earrings or chat with working artists. Refreshments will be available and kids are welcome. The event is part of ArtsBrookline's Third Thursdays series, which we previewed in July.
Friday–Friday, Aug. 21–22: Late-night horror at the Coolidge
Coolidge Corner Theatre's "After Midnite" series screens "The Burning" on Friday, Aug. 21, and "Ernest Goes to Camp" on Saturday, Aug. 22, both at 11:59 p.m., according to Brookline.News. Tickets are $17 at 290 Harvard St.
Sunday, Aug. 23: Pizza party for summer readers
Brookline Booksmith caps the week with a Summer Reading Pizza Party from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 279 Harvard St. Kids who completed the Booksmith summer reading challenge get in free with their finished reading log. Activities include games, bookmark and bracelet making, and special summer reading stickers. RSVP is required.
