Every natural grass field in Brookline is off-limits Wednesday, July 29, and Thursday, July 30, after the town's Department of Public Works shut them down due to saturated turf.

The closure affects all organized sports, youth league games, practices, and recreation programs that use grass fields across town. The town's official calendar notice names no exceptions.

Families and coaches expecting to use fields those evenings will need to check with their league organizers about cancellations or rescheduling. The town has not announced whether any specific games or programs have been moved to alternate dates.

Why the town closes wet fields

Under Brookline's field management policy, DPW staff inspect turf based on field condition, weather patterns, and their knowledge of soil and drainage at each site. Playing on waterlogged grass risks compacting the soil, killing new growth, requiring expensive repairs, and injuring players.

The town posts field status updates at 1 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. on weekends. Residents can check brooklinema.gov or subscribe to the DPW Park Closures calendar for real-time notices.

Other outdoor programming at risk

The wet weather may also threaten other town programming scheduled for Wednesday evening. The Brookline Recreation Summer Concert Series has Vanessa Trien performing family music at Emerson Garden on Davis Avenue from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on July 29. The series cancels performances in the event of rain.

The Summer Eats program, which serves free breakfast and lunch at 575 Brookline Avenue Playground through Aug. 15, operates at an outdoor site that falls under the town's grass-field jurisdiction.
