Brookline High School's football team opened the 2026 season with a 31-9 rout of Newton South on Thursday, Sept. 10, at home. The Warriors won by 22 points in a reversal from last season, when Newton South beat Brookline 14-8 in Week 3 of the 2025 campaign — part of a 2025 season in which Brookline finished 2-9, with wins over Lexington (27-10, the season opener) and Hopkinton (8-3, on Nov. 7).

Newton South, meanwhile, went 5-6 last season, entering Thursday's game with a stronger 2025 record than Brookline's. None of that mattered once the ball was kicked off at 7 p.m.

The blowout also defied outside expectations. MassLive's Pigskin Prophet had picked Newton South to win 16-12. Brookline beat that prediction by 22 points.

Thursday's game was one of several early-week contests across the Bay State Conference. Eight of the league's 10 teams played Thursday rather than Friday, with Rosh Hashanah beginning at sunset Friday shifting the usual high school football schedule. The Thursday slate produced blowouts across the conference. Natick blanked Needham 41-0. Milford routed Framingham 49-7. Braintree shut out Wellesley 13-0. Newton North topped Waltham 28-14, according to MassLive's statewide scoreboard. Brookline's 31-9 margin fit right in with a night of lopsided results across the league.

Individual statistics, including rushing and passing totals, were not available as of Friday, Sept. 11. The Warriors' Week 2 opponent, date and time had not been confirmed.
