Brookline High's golf team could be required to play stroke play in every regular-season match starting in 2027 under a proposal headed for a statewide vote.

The MIAA's Tournament Management Committee is scheduled to vote Wednesday, Sept. 9, on a plan that would eliminate match play, Stableford and modified Stableford scoring across the regular season. The proposal would also overhaul the postseason, replacing 12 sectional tournaments and three divisional championships with five divisional meets and one All-State championship, the Boston Globe reported. If approved, the measure would go to the MIAA Board of Directors for final approval.

The Bay State Conference, where the Warriors compete, already introduced stroke play this fall. Head coach Dave Ford's squad opened the 2026 season with a 225-227 win over Milton on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Senior captain Tryg Driscoll leads a program that fields both a varsity and junior varsity team each fall, with rosters set by summer tryouts.

That early adoption gives Brookline a head start. Under the current statewide system, leagues use a patchwork of scoring formats. Mary O'Brien, the longtime Weston golf coach and coaches' representative on the MIAA golf committee, has pushed for uniformity.

"We're basically the only sport where every league has their own type of scoring … I think it's unfair to ask the kids to play match play all season, and then in the postseason go to stroke play," O'Brien told the Globe.

The postseason overhaul would shrink the field significantly. Roughly 900 to 950 golfers currently compete at sectionals. Under the new format, 480 would play at five divisional meets and up to 93 at All-States.

Not every coach supports the change. Nauset coach Brian Hicks questioned the need for the overhaul. Reading coach Jeff Nelson raised concerns about pace of play at private courses, where stroke play rounds run longer and daylight becomes scarce by October. The proposal would cap individual hole scores at double par plus one to address pace.

Brookline hosts Brockton on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 12:45 p.m. The Warriors then host Natick on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 12:30 p.m.
