Brookline Police are asking residents to help identify a man captured on surveillance footage in connection with a bicycle stolen from Commonwealth Avenue on Monday, June 1.

The department released the footage and a detailed suspect description on Monday, July 27, nearly two months after the reported theft, according to a report published by Patch. Detectives want to speak with the man but, according to the department, he is not considered wanted at this time.

Suspect description

Police described the suspect as a man with a skinny build, long dark hair, and a beard. He was wearing a blue graphic t-shirt with the words "Stay Fly" printed across the front, black Nike pants, and orange and gray Nike sneakers. He was also carrying a red backpack.

The surveillance footage captured the man on Commonwealth Avenue on the same day the theft was reported. Police have not released a specific block address or identified the victim.

The request is the latest in a string of public appeals Brookline Police have made in property theft cases over the past year. In October 2025, the department posted surveillance footage on X seeking help identifying a suspect in a multi-bike theft in the Village area and directed residents to the same detective tip line, 617-730-2710. In November 2025, police made a similar appeal after a locked scooter was stolen from a bike rack behind the Coolidge Corner Theatre.

In each of those cases, as in this one, the department noted the subject was not wanted while asking anyone who recognized the person to call detectives.

The Commonwealth Avenue case is a separate incident from those earlier thefts and from the Coolidge Corner larceny suspects the department publicized in July.

How to help

Anyone who recognizes the man in the surveillance footage or has information about the June 1 bicycle theft on Commonwealth Avenue should contact Brookline Police detectives at 617-730-2710.
