Brookline's Bay State Conference competition looks different after Week 1.

The Warriors rolled Newton South 31-9 in their season opener on Thursday, Sept. 10. Quarterback Brendan Bottiglieri connected with Omer Zilberberg on an 88-yard touchdown pass to open the second half and blow the game open. Brookline is 1-0.

But the biggest BSC result came from Walpole. The Timberwolves knocked off defending Division 3 state champion King Philip, 16-13, handing the No. 5-ranked Warriors their first loss to a public school since Thanksgiving 2022.

That ended a 38-game King Philip winning streak against public-school opponents, according to the Boston Globe. King Philip went 13-0 last season and entered 2026 ranked No. 5 in the Globe's preseason Top 20. Walpole sat at No. 20.

The game was also King Philip's first without longtime head coach Brian Lee, who stepped down in June after 21 seasons. Anthony Vizakis, a four-year KP assistant, took over.

Walpole quarterback Blake Pilieski struck first, hitting wide receiver Shane Harrington on a 61-yard catch-and-run touchdown late in the first quarter. A botched King Philip punt snap sailed out of the end zone for a safety, and the Timberwolves led 9-3.

King Philip stormed back. Freshman running back Ethan O'Connell ripped off an 80-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Kicker Nate Crowley added a 35-yard field goal in the third to put King Philip ahead 13-9.

Trailing in the fourth, Walpole got the ball back in King Philip territory after a turnover on downs. Running back Drew Cantrell finished the drive with an 11-yard scoring run with 2:19 left.

King Philip quarterback Brody Zolak drove into Timberwolves territory in the final minutes. Walpole's defense held.

"I grabbed Blake Pilieski and said it's time to lead this team … it's time to lead them to a touchdown, to a victory, let's go, and he responded right away," Walpole head coach Chris Sullivan told MassLive after the game.

The win snapped a three-game Walpole losing streak to King Philip. The Timberwolves had dropped their opener each of the past three seasons, including a 21-0 shutout in 2025.

Walpole (1-0) travels to Division 5 runner-up Foxborough on Friday, Sept. 18. Brookline, also 1-0, heads into Week 2 with a conference landscape that already looks more competitive than preseason polls predicted.
