Two Brookline businesses on key retail corridors went before the Planning Board on Wednesday, July 29, seeking approval for new façade signage. One is a Coolidge Corner fixture refreshing its look. The other is a newcomer preparing to open on Harvard Street.

Eureka Puzzles and Games, the specialty game and puzzle shop at 1355 Beacon St., applied to replace its existing façade sign, according to the board's amended meeting agenda). The store, founded by David Leschinsky in 2004, carries more than 5,000 products according to a trade profile and has been a Coolidge Corner staple for over two decades.

At 406 Harvard St., a new façade sign for Yu Yue Bar & BBQ signals the next chapter for a space formerly occupied by Kao Jiu, a Chinese BBQ restaurant that announced its closure in March.

Yu Yue is operated by URBANTASTE LLC. The Brookline Select Board considered the transfer of Kao Jiu's all-alcohol beverages license to Yu Yue on Wednesday, July 15, with Alezha Cai listed as proposed manager, according to Select Board records). The restaurant's license application describes 46 indoor seats, 24 outdoor dining seats, and hours from 10 a.m. to midnight daily.

Both properties sit in Precinct 17, which covers the Coolidge Corner and Harvard Street commercial corridor.

The sign/façade morning meeting, chaired by Matt Hyatt, began at 8:30 a.m. Under Brookline's review process, all new signs and façade alterations in commercial areas require Planning Board approval before applicants can obtain a building permit. The board can approve a proposal as submitted, approve with conditions, or decline to recommend approval, according to the town's sign and façade design review page.

The board's decisions on both cases had not been posted as of Wednesday morning. Once approved, applicants submit stamped plans to the Building Department to obtain a sign permit. No opening date for Yu Yue Bar & BBQ has been announced.
