The Brookline Police Department on Wednesday, July 16, notified residents that a Level 3 sex offender convicted of aggravated rape is homeless in the area.

Sean M. Thomas, 57, is classified by the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board as posing a high risk of reoffending and a high degree of danger to the public. He was convicted of aggravated rape in 1991, according to the registry board. The board lists him as homeless with no registered address on file.

Thomas is not wanted by police. The department said the notification is informational, issued to meet its obligations under the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry law, which requires police to actively alert community members likely to encounter a Level 3 offender.

No specific neighborhood or location within Brookline was identified in the notification.

The Sex Offender Registry Board describes Thomas as 5 feet 11 inches tall, approximately 215 pounds, with brown eyes and gray or partially gray hair. The board lists six aliases: Maurice Thomas, Marcus Benson, Steven Watts, Stephen Watts, Edward Foley, and Sean Garner.

Level 3 is the highest classification assigned by the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board. It indicates the individual poses a high risk of reoffending and that a substantial public safety interest is served by actively disseminating their information to the community.
